Earth Day 2010 is April 22nd - just 11 days away.
I was talking with my husband about what we can do this year with the kids to help teach them about this day. Although my no-car zone doesn't technically begin until May, I plan to give up the car for Earth Day as well. He immediately suggested we don't use any electricity for the day. I was shocked by how much he's willing to give up! No coffee, no computer, no lights - hmm, a candle light dinner might not be so bad! As the idea sunk in, my first thought was what about the refrigerator - that might have to be an exception unless we go all out and stock a cooler. My second thought was that we're on a well and when we have no power we have no water. Perhaps a second exception. . .but we can probably store up some water ahead of time for cooking, washing up and toilet flushing. Finally it occurred to me (since Earth Day is on a Thursday) that he will leave for work around 7 AM and return around 7 PM - participating in the "no electricity zone" for a mere few hours while I'm busting it on the bike, bus and foot and managing at home without power! He is a smart one! Except that I called him on it.
I suggested that he give up HIS car for a day (after all, it is the 40th anniversary of Earth day)! Just one day! Yes, it will be a little over an hour to work on the bus, but the new grandmother was doing it to visit her grand-baby! He can manage for just one day, right? He isn't very convinced.
So, I need YOUR help! What are YOU doing to make a change this Earth Day? Even changing for just one day will make a difference! Comment and help me convince my husband that he can give up his car for Earth Day 2010!
